Angela Plut, 1st Grade Teacher

The “Dirt” on Dirt!

This week, first grade studied soil in Science.  We learned all about the different types of soil.  We investigated the attributes of each and brainstormed what they are used for in the real world.  We also did an experiment to see which type of soil holds the most water (top soil, sand, or clay).

At the end of the week we made some soil of our own…the edible kind!
(SHHHH…it was a surprise!)

We discovered that bedrock lies deep under ground and on top of bedrock is sand (crushed up graham crackers).

On top of sand comes clay (chocolate pudding).

The top layer of soil in the ground is topsoil (crushed up Oreo cookies).

And what lives in topsoil because of the humus?  Earthworms (Gummy worms) of course!!!

Of course the best part of learning about the layers of soil in Science is…

Getting to EAT it at the end!  It was so YUMMY!!!
