Kindergarten Team

5th Grader Readers

Kindergartners naturally look up to the older students as role models. Last week, our kindergartners had the opportunity to share their love of reading with fifth graders. The fifth graders paired up with a buddy or two and read books to them. The kindergartners also had the opportunity to share their books with their buddy.

“What really impressed me was that the fifth graders really practiced reading with expression and voice,” said kindergarten teacher Mrs. Scharr.  She also added that they were able to conquer the short attention span of the students.

“They also did a great job of building confidence with the kindergarten students.” said Ms. Gurney, “The fifth graders encouraged them with their sight word knowledge and reading strategies to decode unfamiliar words.”

The experience was enjoyed by both the teachers and the students.
Here is what some fifth graders had to say:

“I thought they would be hyper, but they listened the whole time to us.”

“I liked how much they appreciated us reading to them.”

“I thought it was going to be kind of fun, but it turned out to be really fun.”

Fifth grade teachers Mrs. Harmon and Mr. Sumner suggested that this would be a great tradition to start with the lower and upper elementary classes! The kindergarten teachers and students couldn’t agree more!

Some of the kindergarten students said…

“It was good and fun to read with the fifth graders.”

“When they read funny books, they made me laugh.”

“It was very nice of them.” –Rex H.

1st Grade Team

BUGZ!

Last Tuesday night, a swarm of bugs took over Cimarron Elementary! After practicing and rehearsing for over a month, first grade debuted their musical, “Bugz,” for their friends and family members. The show brought a packed house and these kiddos did not disappoint!

Each 1st grader made their very own costume and just about every type of bug was in attendance—butterflies, bumble bees, fire ants, dragonflies, and MANY more!

The students sang their hearts out to songs about bugs taking over a picnic. The girls charmed the audience with their song “Be a Lady” while the boys belted “March of the Army Ants.”

The following day, these hard working first graders were able to show off their musical during the school day in TWO performances for the rest of the student body! I know that my class was VERY excited to wear their costumes at school!

All of the first grade teachers are SO PROUD of our students for putting on such an amazing show! The kids had so much fun learning these songs, rehearsing and performing that there may have even been some tears when it was all over. However, as our bugs would say, “Don’t worry little stinkbug—it will all work out for you!”

A.J.-4th Grade Student

A Trip Through History by A.J.

On February 13th,  I went to the Capitol to get a private tour as a guest of State Representative Dr. John Zerwas. My outing was a fantastic gift from Ann Hodge, President of the Katy Chamber of Commerce.

Dr. John Zerwas

I saw neat stuff like the Rotunda (that's the dome). I also saw trillions of offices. We got lost in the maze of offices! Did you know that the Texas State Capitol is the largest state capitol building in the country? Also, did you know that the Capitol is a historic site? In the Senate chamber there is a painting of the Battle of the Alamo.

After we left the Capitol, we went to the Texas State Cemetery. The Texas State Cemetery is AWESOME! I saw Chris Kyle's grave. The book and movie "American Sniper" are based on his life. There were also graves from lots of old historical people. There were tons of Confederate soldiers. I also saw Suzanna Dickinson's grave. I learned in my social studies class that she was a survivor of the Battle of the Alamo. There was the grave of someone from the Old 300 as well as Stephen F. Austin.

It was awesome to see all these things that I have been learning about in 4th grade.

3rd Grade Team

Future Botanists At Work

In 3rd grade, students are using their observation skills to identify the structures (parts) of plants.  As they observe, they try to determine the function of each part.  We will be learning how the structures of plants and animals help them adapt and survive in specific environments.

“I noticed that the red part had spikes.  The spikes are to protect the plant from herbivores.”   -Braden

“We were observing how the green part of the plant was smooth.  We think that the green part helps the plant take in the sunlight and make its own food.”  -Leah

“Me and Julia were describing the plants.  We noticed that in the flowers there was a little bit of water.  We noticed that the stem had little hairs on it.”  -Vance

“I think the leaves are for getting energy for the plant.  The flowers are bright to make the bees come.”  -Julia
